Little Known facts about the Hoyings:
Carl Heinrich Hoyng came to the United States with his wife Maria and his son Clemens on Sep. 16, 1834 aboard the ship “The Everhard” arriving in Baltimore Maryland. They made their home on the land the Gottfrid Anton Hoyng purchased a year before. He became a citizen of the U.S. on Oct.29, 1838.
In 1848 Carl pledged $40. towards a new brick church in Minster, and in 1852 he became a “founding father” for the new parish church in Egypt, Ohio. Pictures of the church are further down the page.
Carl and Maria had 2 sons one which died in Lohne, Germany at the age of 3, the youngest son Clemens learned to walk aboard the ship to America.
The story is told that when Clemens was attending school McLean Township School #1 he would write his name in the German style with two dots over the O or the Y. In trying to “Americanize” young Clemens his teacher Mr. Sherman introduced the spelling of Hoyng with an I, so hence the name Hoying.

That’s a great story! Thank you for sharing. I am Louise’s granddaughter, Luke’s daughter. My daughter Olivia was really excited to see this also. So glad I came across this today. I was wondering if anyone might shed some light on something. Did grandma ever have anything to do with a library or something with taking care of books for the church around 1989?
